ARCHITECTURE OF THICKETS

Architecture of Thickets draws together the research inquiries of SEA’s 2023-24 cohort to read and explore space as a thicket. A thicket is a dense, opaque gathering of moving bodies, matter, ideas, and capital that are in contingent and incongruous relationships with each other. The spatial relationships between these entities are held together by desires for accumulation, for freedom, for engagement, for violence, for dignity, and for power. These relationships are mediated by infrastructures, interfaces, and narratives that intersect each other. In these mediums, entities interact, dance, communicate, collaborate, play, exploit, fight, compete, negotiate, and engage with each other. To read space as a thicket requires new methods that attend to the textures, vulnerabilities, intimacies, and frictions that have accrued over time and manifested in different forms. In exploring these different aspects of space through the conceptual lens of thickets, the undergraduate thesis seminar hopes to open up new dialogues in the fields of architecture and architectural research.

For us at the School of Environment and Architecture (SEA), architectural research has been intrinsic to thinking, teaching, and practicing architecture over the past decade. To Experiment, In the Present aims to further this line of thought by asking, once again, with others: What does it mean to experiment in architectural research in the present moment? The present moment here is not just a specific time and space that surrounds us, but also an incomplete duration that extends into the past and across geographies infinitely. It gathers all that has transpired–the histories of a million architectural thoughts, criticisms, methods for thinking and drawing, and the building practices–both major and minor. In the present moment, then, how do we locate and position ourselves as architects? What do we pay attention to and how? How do we work with and beyond the research methodologies drawn from other disciplines and fields? What are the devices of engagement and representation available to us to engage with the world? What does inventing spatial methodologies for architectural research involve? These guiding questions will be explored through a conversation between academics, pedagogues, and practitioners, and will be grounded in their ongoing academic inquiries across different areas of architectural research and practice.
